Volunteer with Outreach and Advocacy!

CHIMO Crisis Services invites volunteers to join its exciting Outreach and Advocacy Service.[link to: ../02outreach.html] With a storefront office located near Richmond Centre, this leading edge program operates during business hours from Monday to Friday.

CHIMO trains and supports skilled volunteers to work one-on-one with clients experiencing a range of challenges. Volunteers help clients gather information, gain knowledge, and develop the confidence and skills to effectively speak and act for themselves to resolve their crises.

Outreach and Advocacy Volunteers will work together one-to-one with each client to:

Determine the scope of client wishes and needs
Analyze client’s needs and goals
Prioritize objectives and develop an action plan
Implement the plan
Accompany clients to access external services when needed
Monitor and review results and revise the plan as needed
Effectively close the file when the work is done

Minimum Volunteer Requirements:

19 years of age or older
Ability to speak and write fluently in English
Successful completion of CHIMO’s Core Training and Personal Advocacy Training
Ability to demonstrate empathy with people in crisis
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and Internet Explorer
Fluency in another language is an asset
Experience working in community services is an asset
Minimum commitment of 100 hours upon completion of training
Volunteer one four-hour shift per week during business hours (Monday – Friday, 9AM – 5PM)

Volunteers are also required to have an understanding of socio-economic conditions and inter-personal dynamics related to diversity, violence in relationships, addiction, poverty, immigration, homelessness, and mental health issues.
