Volunteering at CHIMO

Volunteering with CHIMO offers a unique and rewarding opportunity to support those in need and to make a positive difference in your community. It is a powerful avenue for ongoing personal growth. It is also a great way to gain valuable employment-related skills, knowledge, and experience.

We currently offer three volunteer programs. Please click on the links below to find out more about these opportunities:

Community Education Services

Volunteer Presenters for Community Education Services deliver social-emotional learning workshops in high schools. Workshops cover the following topics: Suicide Awareness, Stress Management, Teen Relationship Abuse Prevention and Stress/Suicide for ESL classes. Workshops are delivered weekdays between 8:00 am and 3:00 pm. Volunteer presenters create an emotionally safe environment, facilitate activities and questions and build awareness of community resources.

Crisis Line Volunteers

Crisis Line Volunteers provide emotional support, referral information, and crisis intervention to a diverse population of people in crisis. Callers seek support with a wide range of issues. The Line operates from 9:00 am to midnight daily. In addition to being a crisis line, the Line is also a support service complementing Richmond Mental Health Services as a direct access point for people who need emergency mental health services.

Outreach and Advocacy

Outreach and Advocacy Volunteers work one-to-one to help clients gather information, gain knowledge and develop the confidence and skills to effectively speak and act for themselves in resolving their crises. Volunteers may also accompany clients to access external services. The Outreach and Advocacy office operates from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday to Friday. Volunteers with capacity in multiple languages are encouraged to apply.

How to Apply for a Volunteer Position

No specific experience is required to take part in any of CHIMO’s unique volunteer-delivered services. We provide comprehensive training to prepare you for the volunteer role that you choose.

  • Read through the information and application package.
  • Decide which volunteer position may be a good fit for you and CHIMO.
  • Complete application and return by email, fax, mail or in person.

Please apply to only one program. After completing the initial volunteer commitment with one program, you may choose to remain with that program, where you have access to opportunities for enhanced development and greater flexibility in how you contribute. Alternatively, you may consider exploring different volunteer opportunities with other CHIMO programs. For more information, please contact us.

Volunteer Selection Process

  1. Potential volunteer reviews application package and submits application form.
  2. Applicant receives confirmation that application has been received.
  3. An interview is arranged for qualifying candidates.
  4. The references provided by the applicant will be contacted after the interview.
  5. The applicant completes a criminal records check. Please note that a criminal record does not automatically disqualify an applicant. Acceptance of the record is dependant on the nature of the charge and when it occurred.
  6. An applicant who has been accepted into the Crisis Line or Outreach and Advocacy programs is required to pay a training fee of $80, and for Community Education, $40. This fee is required before the first day of training to secure his/her space in training, unless other arrangements have been made.
  7. Acceptance into training does not automatically qualify an applicant to volunteer. Applicants must successfully complete all training sessions and the volunteer evaluation process is ongoing.
